Are you considering going through recruitment but don’t know if it’s right for you? I’ve paired down my top 5 (out of a million) reasons that you should go greek! This is a big decision and I guarantee that it will change your life. My hope is that after reading this, you’ll see that the change will only be for the better and that joining a greek organization can be one of the best decisions you can make for yourself. I know it certainly was for me!
Pro Tip: Going Greek only works if you put in the time, energy, and love to make it a great experience. There are always extreme cases but typically in college and life, you only get out what you’ve put in.
One // Community
Don’t believe the lies; sisterhood is even better than you’ve already heard. I actually cannot stress enough the importance of community in college. You certainly have the opportunity to find community outside of a sorority but there is something about sisterhood that simply cannot be beat. There really are no substitutes!
Within every sorority is a mixture of passions, talents, interests, and dreams. So do not fret, no matter where you find yourself, you will find your niche. Within the structured umbrella of community within your organization, you will find sisters who satisfy such diverse parts of who you are! You will find sisters to run with, study with, walk to class with, and even live with. When you get a hundred or more women in a room, theres bound to be some diversity.
The community that I’ve found in Kappa has been incredible. There’s a sister for every occasion and a few that I drag along to every situation, even when those situations get a little questionable.(Insert one of many hilarious, albeit slightly ridiculous, stories here.) You will make friends in college but there is nothing like having a family of incredible women who are there for you at the drop of a hat, no matter if you’re about to run your first 5k (pictured below) or dress up like the little mermaid (also pictured below).
Two // Support
Y’all, college is hard. These four years are going to throw you for a loop and you’re going to walk away a better woman for it. You’re going to need a support system when you’re away from home. You may think that casual friends down the hall are going to cut it, but you will need more. Whether it’s because of a bad week, a failed test, or even a loss in your family, there will be moments of weakness and sisters will be there without you ever asking. Talk about real friendship! Your sisters will be the ones to drive you to your first interview, dry your eyes after a break up, and then celebrate with your first A. Rush for sisterhood and rush for support.
Three // Fun
I have heard from so many high school seniors who have the same concern: “I love the idea of sisterhood but I don’t know if I can balance all the parties with school. I just can’t sacrifice my academics for partying.” If this is your story, I have good news for you, sororities are designed with their girls in mind! Every sorority is different, but “fun” comes in many forms in college. Yes, you will be introduced to opportunities for mixers and socials with fraternities, but there are also tons of retreats, trips, and sisterhood socials too!
The secret to managing a balance between college and partying is managing yourself and knowing your own morals and boundaries. The reality is that no matter whether you’re in a sorority or not, you will be put in precarious situations and you may have to choose between studying for your chem exam or dressing up like a kindergartener. Once you step foot into college, you are now responsible for determining your priorities and your boundaries. It’s up to you to create the balance and a sorority will teach you these lessons in a safe environment.
The wonderful part of joining a sisterhood is that there are plenty of girls who have gone before you and are happy to help you make those decisions. There is power in wisdom and wisdom in experience. Your sisters will be happy to help you pick a costume or tell you when you need to stay home. It may be your responsibility but your sisters will carry whatever weight they can!
You will also have a lot of fun. Trust me.
Four // Opportunities
There are so many times throughout the last two years where I’ve looked around and realized that without Kappa I would never have had the opportunities that I’ve had. Whether it’s the opportunity to be on exec as our Risk Manager or running my first 5k my freshman year, my sisters made it happen. Sororities build leaders, active community members, and well-rounded women. Your sisters will push you to step out of your comfort zone to apply for the impossible dream, to try something you’ve never imagined, and will give you the confidence to create new memories.
If there is something that you are interested in, there is a sister who will be there to encourage you to pursue it. They will likely even have connections and advice to help you along the way. If you have the opportunity to join a sorority, take it and more opportunities will come your way.
Five // Influence
Influence (n): the capacity to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, or the effect itself.
Greek life takes girls and turns them into women, takes followers and turns them into leaders, and takes opportunities and turns them into successes. When you become a sister, you are introduced to a world built on personal relationship building and mentorship. These relationships will give you the knowledge and confidence to reach your goals on campus and within your community.
The minute that you join a sorority you take on your letters and are given the opportunity to build a legacy for yourself and your house. You will have a hand in shaping the future of your sorority and all the lives that you will be able to touch during your four years and even after! It’s incredible to realize the kind of impact and influence that you can have simply by rushing!
Going Greek can be an extremely tough decision but it can be one of the greatest parts of your college years. Whether you join for the sisterhood or join for the 200 new instagram followers, I know that you will get more out of it than you could ever imagine.
I would love to hear your thoughts about what you’ve gotten out of your sorority or what questions you may have just beginning the whole process! Have a great week y’all and keep updated with Creating She daily by taking a peak at the Instagram and Tumblr!
