I want to glimpse back two years to when I pulled up to my freshman year dorm with two cars and a U-Haul full of all my “college necessities”. Y’all I don’t know if you’re familiar with how big a U-Haul is… but I want you to know that it’s huge. You could fit my entire J. Crew wish list in there, which is saying a lot.
Creating She Pro Tip: If you need a U-Haul you are probably bringing too much.
The trick to having a successful, beautiful, stress free freshman dorm is to keep it simple. Dorm’s can fit a ton but you will quickly become overwhelmed if you are buried under all your stuff.
To prevent you from making the same mistakes I did (perks of girl community), I’ve created a Creating She College Prep Series! I’ll walk you through all of my best advice and you’ll come out being as prepared as She would be. To begin let’s start with a college packing checklist. There are a few things to consider as you begin to craft your perfect packing list!
One // What Kind of Room Will You Be Living In?
Yes, I know this seems simple but it’s an easy one to overlook. Will you have your own bathroom that you need to clean and decorate? Will you have a roommate and can split the cost of things? Does your dorm come furnished? What size bed will you have? You really need to know exactly what kind of situation you’re getting into so that there are no surprises when you show up. Your shopping list can become more complicated as you gather more details about your particular situation. Don’t worry though, I will be walking you through these details all summer!
Two // Will You Want To Study at the Library or at Home?
This can be more difficult to determine before you get to school but it’s certainly something you need to consider. If you are someone who likes to study at home, you will need to set up the perfect work space. Check here for tips on how to do that! If you think that you’re gonna be an all night super star, you won’t need to focus as much on your dorm work space but you may want to invest in some nice earbuds.
Three // Will You Be Rushing?
When you consider rushing, you need to consider the extra clothing that you’ll need during recruitment and throughout the year! You will want to make sure you leave enough room in your planned storage for social costumes, chapter dresses, and all the extra t-shirts you’ll be acquiring. There are a ton of tips for storing these fun extras on pinterest!
Four // What is Your Budget?
Determining your budget will point you in the right direction toward where you should look to fill up your shopping list and find inspiration. You can do so much in small spaces, everything from painting canvases to buying your dream PBTeen sheets. Both routes can make for a beautiful dorm. There is no budget that is too small. I suggest crafting, thrifting, and grabbing from home. But remember not to snag too many deals, your walls fill up quick!
Five // What’s Your Style?
What is your ultimate goal for your dorm? Do you want clean lines and a distinct color story? Do you want your room filled with pictures and memories from home? Maybe you want to buy things that will carry you into your first apartment! No matter where you want to take your dorm, you need to create a clear design goal. I suggest creating a Pinterest board, collecting pictures from your favorite bloggers, and even searching through magazines. Once you begin seeing the design as a whole, you can really pair it down to exactly what you need and what you can live without.
Creating She Pro Tip: For 2 weeks take note of everything you use at home. Every time you make coffee, grab a piece of clothing, or do laundry, write down exactly what you use in any given week. After two weeks, add all that you have used to your shopping list. Anything that you haven’t used can be later considered with the knowledge that it’s not something you use often and can probably be left at home.
