We are half way through summer and as we round the corner toward the finish line of our internships, I wanted to share my tips for stepping up your intern game! It’s time to buckle down and chase your ultimate goals by making an impact at the nine to five. Whether you’re having the time of your life at the internship of your dreams or you’re stuck bored at an office you aren’t quite loving, there’s always room for improvement. Make the most of your time with these five tips!
One // Ask Questions
Speak up! I have found that bosses appreciate and respect those who are interested and passionate enough to actively participate during the day. If you are truly excited to be at work and in the office, make sure to show it. Nothing says, “I want to be here” like well thought out, intelligent questions that lead to teaching moments. Ask about the brand, ask about the business, and ask about your boss! Production and completion of work is important but real impact comes when you dig deeper into learning.
Two // Make it Personal
Make sure that you are not just another face in the office. After a month at my internship I had to look at who and what I was presenting to our group. I realized that I wasn’t showing my personality or allowing who I am to shine through! It’s so easy to withdraw and be shy in a new environment, especially in a business professional setting. What I found was that you will make a bigger impact and have a better experience when you allow your personality to shine!
Three // Be Professional
Professional decorum is essential and you have to tread carefully in the professional world! A joke with your friends may not be professional at the office. That outfit you wore to lunch with your parents may not be an internship appropriate staple. Your internship, no matter how casual is still an incredible opportunity that you need to respect! If you think this may be something you can improve on, it’s never too late to step up how you present yourself professionally!
Four // Arrive Early, Leave Late
Work the long hours and make an impact! Your internship is about more than fetching coffee and doing the bare minimum. You have the opportunity to learn and get an insight into a possible future career. Yes, I know sleeping in sounds wonderful and late nights sound fun, but you have no idea what those extra hours could mean.
Five // Build Relationships // Network
During those extra hours while you’re looking and acting like the classy professional you are, you have the opportunity to network! You may not love your internship but that internship could have the ability to open a door to a future you do love. Invest time into learning from those around you. There’s no telling who you could meet and what opportunities are around the corner!
Y’all I am loving my internship and even I know that there’s room to improve in these areas! Do the very most with where you’re at and doors will fly open. I would love to hear how you’re enjoying your internships and any tips you have for us 20 something professionals!
