I remember the first time I went grocery shopping for my dorm’s mini fridge. I came home with an empty bank account and a month’s worth of groceries that would end up going bad in a week. Oh, memories.
Grocery shopping for yourself is much different than grocery shopping at home, you need less and you can buy whatever you want. It’s up to you to make sure that you don’t go home with 3 boxes of cookies and never even see the produce section. It can seem impossible to stay on budget and avoid the snack aisle, but that’s why I’m bringing you this shopping guide! It’s actually possible to stay on budget and stay healthy at the same time… pinky promise!
One // Shop Local
Shopping at farmer’s markets or stores with local produce will not only increase the likelihood that you’re getting fresh, healthy products but it’s usually much cheaper!
Two // Begin in the Produce Section
Have an order for how you’re going to shop! Typically all the “good” stuff is on the border of the store. Try going there first so that you aren’t distracted by all the icky processed foods in the middle.
Three // Pick a Shopping Schedule and Stick to it
If you want to shop once a week with a weekly budget, then do it. If you want to use a bigger budget and only shop every two weeks, then do it. However, make sure that you’re only buying enough to get by for the time you’ve allotted. Also pay attention to your fresh foods which have a limited life.
Four // Allow Yourself a Few Extras
There are going to be times where you will only be satisfied with chips and oreos. The trick is to only have a few of these items and it shouldn’t take up the majority of your cart! But don’t be afraid to grab a couple snacks to hold you over during all nighters!
Five // Shop using a Hand Basket
Instead of opting for a buggy, grab a smaller basket so that you don’t have the option to take home anything you want. You’ll be more inclined to make better choices when you can’t pick up lettuce because you have too many chips in your basket. This is also a great way to keep your shopping budget friendly!
I hope these tips give you a little guidance next time you’re tempted with sugary goodness in the grocery store. Stay tuned for when I share how I meal plan with y’all! Check out how to get this super simple summertime look below!
